Dear All,

Please find attached the summary and full report of NDSR/ Surveillance
priority diseases and outbreaks for week 42, 2022. For more information you
can visit MoPH website or contact our department at MoPH.

Summary:

*         Out of 519 functional Surveillance sentinel sites, 510 (98.3%)
have submitted reports this week.

*         A total of 545,161 new consultations, 209,585 (38.4%) were due to
Surveillance targeted diseases. That included 110,170 (52.6%) males and
99,415 (47.4%) females. Also, 101,163 (48.3%) under five years old and
108,422 (51.7%) five years old and over, reported this week.

*         The main causes of consultations in this week were ARI Cough &
Cold, 120,681 (22.1%) cases out of total new consultations, Acute Diarrheal
Diseases 58,105 (10.7%) cases out of total new consultations, and Pneumonia
22,186 (4.1%) cases out of total new consultations.

*         A total of 204 deaths were reported this week, of which 52 (29.5%)
deaths were due to Surveillance targeted diseases, which include 34
Pneumonia deaths, 07 COVID-19 deaths, 08 suspected Meningitis/ Severely ill
Child deaths, 03 suspected Acute Viral Hepatitis deaths.

.         In addition, during this week 17 outbreaks were reported (03
Dengue Fever outbreaks were reported from Kabul, Logar and Nangahar
Provinces, 03 Suspected Measles outbreak were reported from Kabul and Paktya
provinces, 02 Suspected Chickenpox outbreaks were reported from Kabul and
Herat Provinces, 03 Suspected Pertussis outbreaks were reported from Kapisa,
Farah and Takhar provinces, 01 Confirmed Malaria  outbreak was reported from
Kapisa Province, 01 Dog bite/Suspected Rabies outbreak was reported from
Kapisa Province, 01 Suspected Scabies outbreak was reported from Urozgan
Province, 01 Suspected Mumps outbreak was reported from Kabul Province, 01
AWD outbreak was reported from Kapisa Province and 01 Suspected Acute Viral
Hepatitis outbreak was reported from Logar Province).

.         05 Suspected CCHF outbreaks were reported from Balkh, Baghlan and
Kabul provinces

*         Moreover, 913 COVID-19 confirmed cases and 525 suspected Measles
cases were reported at the national level.

COVID-19 Surveillance activities:

In this week, 6275 specimens were tested for suspected COVID-19. Out of
which 913 specimens were confirmed for COVID-19 by RT-PCR.

*         COVID-19 cases positivity rate was 14.5 % in this week, which
increased 2.1% compared to previous week.

*         Bed occupancy rate (BOR) at the national level was 45.8%, which
increased 5.2 % compared to last week.

*      Out of 913 confirmed cases, 2091 contacts of 598 confirmed cases were
traced that were mostly family members with an average of 3 contacts per one
case, and will be continued until 14 days of their last contact with the
confirmed cases. Also, surveillance screening teams screened all the
passengers in the points of entry for fever. In addition, health education
was conducted for them, about 44,604 passengers have been screened for
COVID-19 in the points of entry of five provinces (Balkh, Nangarhar, Herat,
Kandahar and Nimroz).

Challenges:

*       Dengue fever cases are increasing in the country, especially in the
east part of the country

*       Weak preparedness for the outbreak investigation and response in the
provincial level

*       AWD outbreaks and diarrheal disease cases are still a public health
problem, in this week we had 01 AWD outbreaks with 04 deaths due to AWD with
dehydration.

*       Suspected Measles cases, in this week 525 suspected
measles cases were reported.

Recommendations:

*         Strong preventive and control measure are needed for the
prevention and control of dengue fever cases in the country

*         RRT team should be established in the provincial level to timely
and properly investigate and respond the diseases outbreaks

*         Effective prevention and control measures are needed for the
control of AWD cases and outbreaks at the national level.

*         Measles vaccination and preventive measures should be strengthened
and the measles response strategy should be revised.

o    EPI: As the surveillance system detected 525 suspected Measles cases at
the national level, so further prevention and control measures should be
conducted by the EPI team.

*         The findings should be analyzed further in different levels and
appropriate actions to be taken by the concerned departments.
