sporting NGO staff members overturned due to damaged tarmac in Eshan Qeshla=
q area in Dasht-e Qala District on the Dasht-e Qala-Khwajabahawuddin Road, =
while traveling to Taloqan City. The crash killed one female NGO staff memb=
er, wounded 2 others, and damaged the vehicle.<br /><br /></div>
<div style=3D"text-align: justify;">Previously, on 15 September, another ve=
hicle transporting NGO workers overturned on a secondary road and fell into=
 the river in the Ghaz-Dara area in Maimai District of Badakhshan Province.=
 The passengers, three NGO staff members, were going to a project site. Fol=
lowing the incident, two NGO staff members were killed, the driver was inju=
red, and the vehicle sunk in the river. Reportedly, the corpses of the staf=
f members were not found at the time of writing.</div>								</div>

ue to pose a risk to NGO staff members, especially when frequenting remote =
districts. The roads connecting several districts of Takhar and Badakhshan =
provinces are unpaved, and the roadbed is unstable. The local authorities d=
o not have the financial resources to start major road infrastructure proje=
cts and focus on small-scale repairs of the existing roadways. Furthermore,=
 the IEA modified or removed traffic safety physical structures such as spe=
ed bumps, bollards, and traffic separators after the takeover, which increa=
ses the likelihood of traffic incidents. Regular road assessments of the ro=
utes used for project implementation can identify risks to staff&rsquo;s ro=
ad movements and determine the feasibility of using such roadways.<br /><br=
 /></div>
<div style=3D"text-align: justify;">The risk posed by the use of unpaved ro=
ads will only increase during the winter. The Fayz Abad-Nusai Road via Yawa=
n DAC, while a viable and shorter option for road movements to Nusai DAC du=
ring summer and autumn, poses additional risks during winter. The road is m=
ostly unpaved and the roadbed is uneven, with several road sectors vulnerab=
le to flash floods and landslides. The Fayz Abad-Nusai Road via Ishkashim D=
AC, while longer, is partly paved and is less susceptible to closure due to=
 weather-related phenomena. However, the roadbed is unstable and the landsc=
ape poses additional challenges. The use of vehicles with off-road capabili=
ty and experienced drivers familiar with the areas to be travelled should b=
e considered when planning road missions.</div>								</div>
