irst anniversary of the death of Ahmad Shah Massoud, known as Martyrs' Day.=
 Martyrs&rsquo; Day was previously celebrated with a public holiday and off=
icial ceremonies and festivities, organised by both government officials an=
d civil society organisations in different locations within Kabul City. In =
previous years, official events in Kabul centred on <a href=3D"https://goo.=
gl/maps/cqszP22cJHzmHTRs7">Massoud Square</a>, <a href=3D"https://goo.gl/ma=
ps/SvkMMuGXg8MaW1pC8">Wazir Akhbar Khan Hill</a>, the grave of Marshal Fahi=
m in&nbsp;<a href=3D"https://goo.gl/maps/4QzuW4hUBXZUz9JJ8">Sarai Shamali</=
a> and the <a href=3D"https://goo.gl/maps/8M8VHgD9BameGwYA6">Loya Jirga Ten=
t</a>, while private and community-organised events usually involved convoy=
s of private vehicles moving throughout the city. Participants in these con=
voys were often armed, and participated in celebratory SAF.<br /><br />No o=
fficial public holiday marking the occasion will take place in 2022, and th=
ere will be no state-sponsored events. There are also no large-scale unoffi=
cial gatherings planned.&nbsp;<br /><br />On 09 September the IEA has stati=
oned additional police force members on the road between Kabul Airport and =
Massoud Square, and there are increased numbers of IEA members present in t=
he central areas of the city.&nbsp;</div>								</div>

ublic gatherings commemorating Massoud's death is low. Large celebratory co=
nvoys are also unlikely. However, some small and informal gatherings may ta=
ke place across the city, including small celebratory convoys on the roads,=
 with the locations mentioned above likely focal points for any gatherings.=
&nbsp;<br /><br />IEA members are likely to respond swiftly to any gatherin=
gs, in line with the heightened security posture adopted on 09 September.&n=
bsp;Escalations of violence in the form of warning SAF fired by IEA members=
 attempting to disperse crowds as well as isolated clashes with gathered in=
dividuals are anticipated in case of unauthorised events taking place. <br =
/><br />Sporadic celebratory SAF to mark Martyrs' Day can also be expected =
throughout the city.&nbsp;</div>								</div>

htened security posture NGO staff can expect extra scrutiny at checkpoints =
on the Airport Square - Massoud Square road, where vehicle checks may be mo=
re thorough than usual and additional document checks may be required.&nbsp=
