 place this afternoon from 1300 hrs onwards, in the presence of large numbe=
rs of IEA forces and officials.<br /><br /></div>
<div style=3D"text-align: justify;">NGOs are advised to avoid Gazergah area=
. The advisory will remain in place at least until the funeral of Mujib al-=
Rahman Ansari is over and people have dispersed from the area.</div>

<div style=3D"text-align: justify;"><strong>As of 2245 hrs:</strong> The ro=
ad block by IEA forces on the <a href=3D"https://goo.gl/maps/rSK4qRCA6P4V3S=
NJ6">Kwaja Abd Allah-e Ansari</a> road connecting Herat City to Gazergah, s=
lightly after the intersection with the road leading to Bam-e Herat, has be=
en turned into a checkpoint. IEA forces conduct thorough inspections of pas=
sing vehicles and pedestrians. While some residents of Gazergah are therefo=
re able to access the area, there are reports of other local inhabitants be=
ing denied passage.&nbsp;<br /><br />IEA forces have significantly increase=
d their security posture in all of Gazergah area, with dozens of armed IEA =
members and vehicles deployed.&nbsp;<br /><br />The funeral of Mujib al-Rah=
man Ansari will take place on 03 September, likely in the afternoon. Thousa=
nds of civilians and IEA members are expected to attend the ceremony. The h=
eavy presence of IEA forces will most certainly remain in place, due to the=
 risk of further attacks.&nbsp;<br /><br /></div>
<div style=3D"text-align: justify;">NGOs are advised to avoid Gazergah area=
. The advisory will remain in place at least until the funeral of Mujib al-=

<div style=3D"text-align: justify;"><strong>As of 1540 hrs:</strong> Initia=
l reports suggest that two explosions have taken place at approximately 123=
0 hrs in and near the Gazergah Mosque, also known as Masjed Jomeh, in the m=
inutes prior to congregational prayers. One of the explosions was caused by=
 a suicide bomber.&nbsp;<br /><br />The blast killed 18 people and wounded =
23, as per official figures. However, the numbers are likely to increase ov=
er time. The wounded have been brought to Herat Regional Hospital, where a =
crowd of civilians has gathered, causing traffic on the boulevard to be blo=
cked.&nbsp;<br /><br />The <a href=3D"https://goo.gl/maps/rSK4qRCA6P4V3SNJ6=
">Kwaja Abd Allah-e Ansari</a> road connecting Herat City to Gazergah is bl=
ocked to civilian traffic by IEA forces, slight after the intersection with=
 the road leading to Bam-e Herat.<br /><br />Fatalities and casualties incl=
ude several IEA members, as well as civilians. A well-known religious figur=
e named Mujib al-Rahman Ansari was killed. The suicide bomber reportedly ca=
me to Ansari and detonated his suicide vest as Ansari was walking from his =
house to the mosque. Ansari was known for his radical and uncompromising st=
ance on both Muslims and non-Muslims. Ansari's brother, Habiburahman Ansari=
, was also killed by the blast.<br /><br />Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the =
Acting First Deputy Minister of Afghanistan for Economic Affairs, is curren=
tly present in Herat to attend a conference that concerned the economy. It =
is alleged that he met with Ansari shortly before the explosions. However, =
it is unclear whether he or his entourage have been impacted by the blasts.=
&nbsp;<br /><br />Ansari and Baradar were likely the intended victims of th=
e attack, although as per INSO's knowledge, there have not been formal clai=
ms of responsibility yet.<br /><br /></div>
<div style=3D"text-align: justify;">The advice to avoid the area remains in=
 place and is extended to the main road connecting Herat City and Gazergah =
area. NGOs should also avoid going to the area around Herat Regional Hospit=
al if it is not absolutely necessary.<br /><br /></div>
<div style=3D"text-align: justify;"><strong>As of 1240 hrs:</strong> At the=
 time and location noted above, an explosion of unknown nature occurred in =
the Gazergah mosque, which is located near the Abd Allah-e Ansari shrine. I=
EA forces arrived in the area and cordoned it off. The number of casualties=
, if there are any, is unknown.</div>
