HUMANITARIAN COORDINATOR CONCLUDES MISSION TO EARTHQUAKE-AFFECTED AREAS IN=
 AFGHANISTAN AND ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN TO DELIVER LIFE-SAVING=
 ASSISTANCE TO STRICKEN COMMUNITIES

The UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Humanita=
rian Coordinator for Afghanistan=2C Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov=2C has concluded a=
 one-day mission to Mir Sahib and Khanadin in Giyan district=2C Paktika Pr=
ovince =E2=80=93 one of the worst-affected areas following Wednesday=E2=80=
=99s devastating 5.9 magnitude earthquake.

The visit=2C which took place on Saturday=2C 25 June=2C also included repr=
esentatives from UNHCR=2C IOM=2C WFP=2C WHO=2C UNICEF=2C UN Women=2C FAO a=
nd OCHA. While there=2C members of the delegation met with female and male=
 members of the affected community=2C many of whom had lost family members=
 and friends=2C including several orphaned and separated children=2C and w=
hose homes are now uninhabitable.

=E2=80=9CYesterday=E2=80=99s visit reaffirmed to me both the extreme suffe=
ring of people in Afghanistan and their tremendous resolve in the face of=
 great adversity=2C=E2=80=9D said Dr. Alakbarov. =E2=80=9CIn addition to f=
ood assistance and emergency shelter and repair=2C interventions such as t=
he restoration of damaged water pipes and cholera prevention and preparedn=
ess activities are absolutely vital=2C as are the restoration of communica=
tion lines=2C road access=2C and basic livelihoods. Without such transitio=
nal support=2C women=2C men=2C and children will continue to endure unnece=
ssary and unimaginable hardship.=E2=80=9D

With assessments ongoing=2C the full scale of Wednesday=E2=80=99s tragic e=
vents has yet to be uncovered. Initial findings from needs assessments sho=
w that in Giyan District alone at least 235 people were killed in Wednesda=
y=E2=80=99s earthquake=2C including 134 children=2C and almost 600 injured=
=2C with children accounting for more than 200 of those wounded. In additi=
on=2C more than 1=2C000 homes have been destroyed and two schools damaged.

Across all earthquake-affected areas=2C satellite imagery reveals damage t=
o at least 2=2C000 homes which are more than 5km from a good road in the h=
ardest hit areas of Giyan and Barmal districts in Paktika Province and Spe=
ra District in Khost Province. It is further estimated that tens of thousa=
nds of homes that are still standing have experienced extensive damage and=
 risk collapsing.

Wednesday=E2=80=99s earthquake comes at a time when increased restrictions=
 on women and girls have amplified their needs and complicated response ef=
forts to assist them over the past few months.

Speaking in Giyan District=2C Alison Davidian=2C the Country Representativ=
e a.i. for UN Women said: =E2=80=9CWomen and girls are differentially affe=
cted by crisis. When their rights to move and work are restricted as they=
 are in Afghanistan=2C they are disproportionately impacted=2C especially=
 in accessing food=2C healthcare and safe shelter. As we move forward in a=
ddressing the needs of the earthquake-affected population=2C women humanit=
arian workers and women led civil society must be at the center of the cri=
sis response. This is the only way to ensure the needs and rights of at-ri=
sk and crisis-affected women and girls are effectively identified and addr=
essed.=E2=80=9D

In response to the earthquake=2C the United Nations and humanitarian partn=
ers have developed a three-month multi-sectoral emergency appeal within th=
e 2022 Humanitarian Response Plan to scale up and expedite the delivery of=
 humanitarian and resilience assistance to almost 362=2C000 affected peopl=
e in Paktika and Khost provinces.

=E2=80=9CNotwithstanding the phenomenal generosity that donors have alread=
y displayed to Afghanistan over these past tumultuous ten months=2C I urge=
 the international community to dig deep at this time=2C as the population=
 confronts yet another emergency=2C and to pledge support to these life-sa=
ving and life-sustaining efforts=2C=E2=80=9D Dr. Alakbarov said.

ess activities are absolutely vital=2C as are the restoration of communica=
tion lines=2C road access=2C and basic livelihoods. Without such transitio=
nal support=2C women=2C men=2C and children will continue to endure unnece=
ssary and unimaginable hardship.=E2=80=9D<br>

With assessments ongoing=2C the full scale of Wednesday=E2=80=99s tragic e=
vents has yet to be uncovered. Initial findings from needs assessments sho=
w that in Giyan District alone at least 235 people were killed in Wednesda=
y=E2=80=99s earthquake=2C including 134 children=2C and almost 600 injured=
=2C with children accounting for more than 200 of those wounded. In additi=
on=2C more than 1=2C000 homes have been destroyed and two schools damaged.=
<br>
<br>
Across all earthquake-affected areas=2C satellite imagery reveals damage t=
o at least 2=2C000 homes which are more than 5km from a good road in the h=
ardest hit areas of Giyan and Barmal districts in Paktika Province and Spe=
ra District in Khost Province. It is further estimated that tens of thousa=
nds of homes that are still standing have experienced extensive damage and=
 risk collapsing.<br>
<br>
Wednesday=E2=80=99s earthquake comes at a time when increased restrictions=
 on women and girls have amplified their needs and complicated response ef=
forts to assist them over the past few months.<br>
<br>
Speaking in Giyan District=2C Alison Davidian=2C the Country Representativ=
e a.i. for UN Women said: =E2=80=9CWomen and girls are differentially affe=
cted by crisis. When their rights to move and work are restricted as they=
 are in Afghanistan=2C they are disproportionately impacted=2C especially=
 in accessing food=2C healthcare and safe shelter. As we move forward in a=
ddressing the needs of the earthquake-affected population=2C women humanit=
arian workers and women led civil society must be at the center of the cri=
sis response. This is the only way to ensure the needs and rights of at-ri=
sk and crisis-affected women and girls are effectively identified and addr=
essed.=E2=80=9D<br>
<br>
In response to the earthquake=2C the United Nations and humanitarian partn=
ers have developed a three-month multi-sectoral emergency appeal within th=
e 2022 Humanitarian Response Plan to scale up and expedite the delivery of=
 humanitarian and resilience assistance to almost 362=2C000 affected peopl=
e in Paktika and Khost provinces.<br>
<br>
=E2=80=9CNotwithstanding the phenomenal generosity that donors have alread=
y displayed to Afghanistan over these past tumultuous ten months=2C I urge=
 the international community to dig deep at this time=2C as the population=
 confronts yet another emergency=2C and to pledge support to these life-sa=
ving and life-sustaining efforts=2C=E2=80=9D Dr. Alakbarov said.<br>
