This report is produced by OCHA Afghanistan in collaboration with humanita=
rian partners via clusters. It covers activities carried out between 31 Au=
gust and 6 September 2020.

HIGHLIGHTS
* As of 9 September=2C 38=2C544 people in Afghanistan have tested positive=
 for COVID-19; 1=2C420 have died and 31=2C048 have recovered.
* Since the start of March=2C partners have medically screened 496=2C024 p=
eople at points-of-entry=2C reached 100=2C674 children with home-based lea=
rning materials and distributed 4.74 million bars of soap in 249 districts=
 across the country.

SITUATION OVERVIEW
MoPH data (https://moph-dw.gov.af/dhis-web-dashboard/#/) shows that as of=
 9 September=2C 38=2C544 people across all 34 provinces in Afghanistan hav=
e tested positive for COVID-19. Some 31=2C048 people have recovered=2C and=
 1=2C420 people have died (75 of whom are healthcare workers). 105=2C422 p=
eople out of the population of 37.6 million have been tested. Almost ten p=
er cent of the total confirmed COVID-19 cases are among healthcare staff.=
 The majority of the deaths were people between the ages of 40 and 69. Men=
 in this age group represent 50 per cent of all COVID-19-related deaths. M=
oreover=2C men account for more than 70 per cent of the total COVID-19 con=
firmed cases=2C however this may be the result of testing bias. Kabul rema=
ins the most affected part of the country in terms of confirmed cases=2C f=
ollowed by Hirat=2C Balkh=2C Kandahar and Nangarhar provinces. Complacency=
 and failure to follow public health advice is creating grave risks in the=
 community with people generally not observing physical distancing
protocols.
The Cash and Voucher Working Group (CVWG) released analysis from the fourt=
h round of data collection under the Afghanistan Joint Market Monitoring I=
nitiative (JMMI). Data from the fourth round of the JMMI was collected bet=
ween 10 and 20 August=2C in 30 provinces. According to the report=2C key i=
nformants (KIs) interviewed reported that 70 per cent of consumers faced b=
arriers to access markets. Of those KIs reporting market access challenges=
=2C 36 per cent cited fear of exposure to COVID-19 and public health restr=
ictions as the main reason. Moreover=2C supply chains have been interrupte=
d in a number of places across the country=2C with 7 per cent of key infor=
mants (KIs) interviewed reporting difficulties in obtaining enough commodi=
ties to meet demand in the last 30 days. The cost of a Minimum Expenditure=
 Basket (https://www.impact-repository.org/document/reach/f3ba3c8b/AFG_REA=
CH_CVWG_JMMI_August.pdf) has increased by one per cent=2C whereas the cost=
 of food basket has increased by two per cent=2C compared
to the third JMMI round (14 and 26 July). The report finds that increased=
 number of shops=2C increase in demand=2C and seasonality (i.e. post-harve=
st) are the main reasons for the price stability. For additional informati=

While implementing activities to mitigate the spread of COVID-19=2C humani=
tarian partners also continue to respond to other ongoing and emerging hum=
anitarian needs. Humanitarians have been responding to new displacement as=
 a result of conflict=2C as well as people affected by flooding in differe=
nt parts of the country. During the reporting period=2C 9=2C242 women rece=
ived antenatal and postnatal care through midwives deployed in Mobile Heal=
th Teams (MHTs). 824 people were treated for trauma care and 232 children=
 under the age of 5 years received routine immunisation through MHTs. 1=2C=
063 children aged 6-59 months received treatment for Severe Acute Malnutri=
tion (SAM) and 32=2C433 children aged 6-59 months received treatment for M=
oderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM). 4=2C877 nutritionally at-risk children u=
nder the age of 5 years received blanket supplementary feeding. 10=2C653 p=
regnant and lactating women (PLW) received assistance through targeted sup=
plementary feeding programmes (TSFP)=2C while 3=2C646
nutritionally at-risk PLWs also received blanket supplementary food. 4=2C4=
12 caregivers received Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) and maternal=
 counselling during the reporting period=2C while 343 community members re=
ceived Maternal=2C Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) counselling. 4=
02 Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases across 4 provinces were identified an=
d referred to Family Protection Centres (FPCs) for case management. 152 di=
gnity kits were distributed to women and girls across 5 provinces. 7=2C322=
 hygiene kits were distributed to people with disabilities=2C pregnant wom=
en and the elderly by Protection Cluster partners across Kabul province. A=
s part of its regular programming=2C WFP reached 140=2C700 people with foo=
d and nutrition assistance between 27 August and 2 September.[1] (#_ftn1)
